Duan Xianzhong


Duan Xianzhong, male, was born in Oct. 1966 in Lengshuijiang City, Hunan Province. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1992, and entered the workforce in 1993. He is now member of the CPC Hunan University Committee and its standing committee, president of Hunan University; professor and doctoral supervisor.


1987: Graduated from Department of Electric Power Engineering of HUST with a bachelor’s degree in engineering;

Sept. 1987: Admitted to HUST for master’s degree in electric power system and automation;

Sept. 1989 to 1992: Studied for doctor’s degree, and then recruited into postdoctoral research station;

From May 1995: Worked at HUST;

July 1998: Promoted to professor;

2000: Visiting professor in Manitoba University, Canada;

Dec. 1996: Head of Department of Electric Power Engineering, HUST;

March 1998: Vice dean of Graduate School, and director of Cultivating Division;

Feb. 2001: Vice dean of School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, HUST;

April 2006: Dean of School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, HUST;

July 2008: Appointed to vice president of HUST;

May 2011: member of the CPC HUST Standing Committee and vice president of HUST;

July 2015: Executive vice president of HUST;

Jan. 2016: Appointed to HNU president.

Research areas and honors:

Duan has been long devoted to power system and automation research and teaching. He is a convener of the State Council’s appraisal team in electrical engineering discipline, and executive member of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE).

He has published more than 150 papers on domestic and international academic journals, including 90 SCI and EI indexed papers. He has won Young Teacher Award of Fok Ying Tong Education Foundation, Distinguished Young Expert Award of Hubei Province, and Award of Ministry of Education for Outstanding Young Teacher in Higher Education Institutions. He was granted with Special Government Allowance of the State Council, and selected as a national candidate of the New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project.

Duan has taken charge of the Project of Computer Aided Coordination for Relay in Power System with Graphical Interface (RelayCAC), which has been applied in 21 grid companies including the State Grid and China Southern Power Grid. His achievements in undertaking the national key technological infrastructure project “Pulsed High Magnetic Field Facility” won two second prizes of National Scientific Development Award, three awards of the Progress Prize in Scientific and Collective Technology at provincial and ministerial level, and one first prize of Teaching Achievement Award at provincial and ministerial level.
