Chinese Academy Museum Wins WA Achievement Award

The 2016 WA Chinese Architecture Awards was revealed recently. The China Academy Museum, designed by Prof. Wei Chunyu and his team, won WA Achievement Award.

The WA Chinese Architecture Awards, a most concerned architecture award in China, was set up in 2002 by magazine World Architecture. It included several sub-awards: WA Achievement Award, WA Design Experiment Award, WA Social Equality Award, WA Technological Innovation Award, WA City Regeneration Award, and WA Housing Award. The WA Achievement Award is the most esteemed one among the others.
The WA Chinese Architecture Awards is influential globally. It aims to encourage and promote practical conditions based on innovation of buildings, in order to activate academic study in Chinese architecture circle, prosper Chinese architectural creation, elevate building quality, and demonstrate Chinese architects’ wisdom, techniques, and achievements.

The Chinese Academy Museum was designed by Prof. Wei Chunyu, Assistant Prof. Qi Jing, and their team of School of Architecture of Hunan University. It is the first national museum themed on history of Chinese academy, and cultural education. The Museum was located beside Yuelu Academy, at the former site of Jingyizhai building, a temporary school building designed by prominent architect Liu Shiying. Five main exhibition halls display millennial history of Chinese academies, as well as their functions of education, academic study, worship to Confucius, and library. Yuelu Academy is an important cultural relic of China. The Chinese Academy Museum, a part of Yuelu Academy, never steals its spotlight. It is just a supporting part with sunken ground and a “side” entrance, showing an unassuming attitude.

The Chinese Academy Museum was once awarded first prize of Outstanding Survey and Design Award by the Ministry of Education in 2013, and Silver Award of Architectural Creation by the Architectural Society of China (ASC) in 2014.
