The Hunan Division Contest of the 3rd All-China Interpreting Contest kicked off on Saturday morning in Hunan University. Vice President of Hunan University Chen Shou delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Over 60 contestants from more than 30 universities and colleges in Hunan Province took part in this contest.

The contest was composed of two phases, i.e. English-Chinese interpretation phase as a knock-out and Chinese–English interpretation phase to fix the prize winners. According to the rules of the contest, the top 24 contestants standing out in the knock-out are eligible to advance to next phase, and the adjudicators choose 2 winners for the first prize, 5 for second prize and 6 for third prize based on the contestants’ total score of two phases. Finally, Wang Huang (postgraduate) from Central South University and Liu Lekai (undergraduate) from Hunan Normal University won the first prize. Jiang Li (postgraduate) from Hunan University and other 4 contestants obtained the second prize. The seven winners of the first and second prize will enter the Central China Division Contest held at Hunan University this December.

This Hunan Division Contest was organized by College of Foreign Languages of Hunan University. It will practically promote translation practice teaching, especially interpreting teaching in the university, and further enhance MTI (Mater of Translation and Interpreting) education by providing the students with favorable chances to practice.

The 3rd All-China Interpreting Contest was launched this October, consisting of preliminary contests, provincial division contests, regional division contests, the semifinals and the finals. Preliminary contests were held at universities and colleges to choose 1 to 3 candidates for the provincial division contest. The top 6 contestants from each provincial division contest enter the regional division contest. The semifinals will be separately held in Qingdao and Nanjing and the top 6 contestants from each site will compete for the finals, which will be inaugurated in June 2014.
