Recently Hunan University (HNU) was recognized at the Silver Level of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) University Recognition Program (URP), making it one of the first three high educational institutions in Chinese mainland receiving this honor.
Founded in 1914, the CAS is the world's only actuarial organization that exclusively focuses on property and casualty risks and serves over 10,000 members worldwide. CAS members are experts in property and casualty insurance, reinsurance, finance, risk management, and enterprise risk management. The URP enhances support for academic institutions that have demonstrated a commitment to strengthening their property and casualty or general insurance educational offerings. The program makes an all-round evaluation of the application universities' curriculum system, teaching force and scientific research strength, talent cultivation achievements, and career planning. So far, there are only 40-plus universities across the globe qualified for the CAS-URP.
HNU College of Finance and Statistics started enrolling undergraduate students in actuarial science program in 1991, making it the first of its kind in China. Being included in the CAS University Recognition List, HNU will receive more support in actuary talent cultivation. As a partner university, HNU's information is presented on the official website of the CAS. HNU faculties and students are entitled to get access to CAS's scientific research resources and teaching cases in property and casualty actuarial industry. Additionally, HNU faculties will be invited to CAS's online seminars on the property and casualty actuarial sector and HNU students will be given priority to participating in CAS summer camps. CAS members will also carry out regular exchanges with HNU faculties and students.
HNU received the recognition of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Universities & Colleges with Actuarial Programs (UCAP) in 2016. China resumed the China Actuarial Examination in 2023. The university then was approved to establish the Changsha Test Center for China Actuarial Examination. This time the involvement in the CAS-URP brought an international recognition to HNU's life assurance and property insurance of actuarial science.
