Hunan University is a comprehensive and national key university providing its students with solid foundations in the sciences, engineering, humanities, and economics and management. The university embraces a diverse range of disciplines, such as philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, biology, physics, engineering, management, and medicine. Thanks to its positive development in recent years, the university has achieved substantial improvements in laboratories both for teaching and scientific research, further advancing its excellent environment for cultivating high-level talent.
The university is proud of its outstanding faculty of over 4,729 members, including 1,940 full-time teachers, 1,272 full and associate professors, 4 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Academy of Engineering, 13 winners of the China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, and 71 selected candidates for the New Century Excellent Talents program. In recent years, the university has attained a batch of outstanding young teachers through its persistent recruitment, and its active encouragement and development of their talents.
The university always spares no efforts to develop its graduate education and lay emphasis on cultivating high-level talents. In the early 1940s, the original Mining Department of the Engineering Institute of Hunan University took the initiative to recruit postgraduate students. Currently, there are about 11,800 graduate students enrolled at the university, including nearly 2,100 doctoral students and over 9,000 master students. Postgraduate students not only actively participate in scientific research in their own disciplines and specialties, but also take part in various academic exchanges and competitions. They have become an important pillar in maintaining the university's long tradition of exceptional scholarship.
Founded in November 2000, the Graduate School of Hunan University is one of the 56 graduate schools in China that have been officially approved by Ministry of Education. To meet the demands of national economic construction, scientific and technological progress, and social development, the Graduate School of Hunan University has adopted a series of reform measures to ensure and enhance the quality of its graduate students. During the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, the university will spare no efforts to develop and enhance its postgraduate education. To meet the general demands of constructing a high-level university producing first-class scholars, further efforts will also be made to persistently advance reform and innovation, reinforce the unique characteristics of the school, and continuously enhance the quality of the scholastic cultivation of our student and faculty bodies. We will strive to build Hunan University into a comprehensive, open and research-oriented university of international influence.
