Wang Deshui,a Chinese artist living in Japan, was appointed as a professor by Hunan University for a term of three years. Zhao Yueyu, the university's president awarded the appointment letter and pinned the university badge on Prof.Wang.
Born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in 1954, Mr.Wang is the 55th descendant of Wang Xizhi, "Sage of Calligraphy" from Tang Dynasty (265-420). He is also known and respected for being the only overseas returned calligrapher listed in "China's Nine Art Giants".
His capabilities range from regular script, Xingshu, Lishu, seal script to cursive script.
Wang created a calligraphic album highlighting local customs and urban culture. Owing to his great interest in Huxiang Culture and Chairman Mao Zedong, he has paid 13 visits to Hunan since 2010 and hosted calligraphy exhibitions themed "Exciting Tour in Hunan" and " Lei Feng Spirits from Generation to Generation" .
According to Master Wang, Yuelu Academy with a history of more than a thousand years boasts of profound culture. The academy with its effective and enchanting portrayal of Huxiang culture attracted him to Hunan University.
He also suggested Hunan should showcase its unique culture and features through traditional artworks like Liling Porcelain, Tongguan Kiln and Xiang Embroidery.
