The event is sponsored by the Hunan Provincial People’s Government, and organized by the Hunan Provincial Department of Technology. There are also more than 20 cooperating institutions, including the Hunan Provincial Economy and Information Committee, Hunan "Two-oriented" Society Construction Office, Hunan Provincial Tourism Bureau, Hunan Industrial Design Association, China-Italy Design & Innovation Center, Hunan University, Sany Group, Sunward Group, Politecnico di Milano,and Italy Association of Industrial Design.

Eight celebrities were invited to be judges: Soon-In Lee, president of Soul Design Center and president of International Council of Societies and Industrial Design; Giorgetto Giugiaro, chairman of Italdesign Giugiaro, who is also honored as "Designer of the Century"; Stefano Giovannoni, a famous designer from Italy, who is founder and chairman of Giovannoni Stadio; Arturo Dell'Acqua, dean professor of School of Design, Polytechnic University of Milan, and four other renowned design masters.

The competition will continue until November 10, 2012, and the final judging and and award presentation ceremony will be held on November 10, 2013. At the awards ceremony, the open group gold prize winner will receive 80 thousand yuan, and the winner of the enterprises group will be awarded 50 thousand yuan.

This year’s event is themed "Design, Innovation, Application", and takes local development into consideration, as it closely implements the "Outlines of Constructing an Innovative Hunan”. The competition includes three design categories: Equipment Manufacturing, Science & Culture,and Sustainable Environment.
