The “Innovation Made Visible, Future By You” Global Bus Design Competition lowered its curtain recently.

Xu Kunwu, an undergraduate student of the School of Design of Hunan University, won a gold prize for his design work “Island”. Li Junjie, a postgraduate student of the school, won a bronze prize for his work “YU伴”. Their instructors were Ji Peng and Zhao Danhua respectively.

“Serving large-scale passengers, public transit is a crucial link in epidemic prevention and control. Designers should consider how to deal with the relations among passengers, and the ties between people and environment”, said Xu. In his design, “Island” implicates an expectation for a more private and comfortable trip for passengers. When the passengers are seated in a triangle pattern, facing to the bus windows, they can enjoy landscapes outside while having privacy.

“People are cautious when taking public transit, and prefer to small-scale, comfortable, safe, and customized trips,” said Li when talking about his design “YU伴(companion)”. Base on his modularized and customized design, different demands of passengers can be satisfied simultaneously, including interior decoration and layout, and customized ride-hailing service in various scenarios.

This competition was initiated by the Yutong Group. It aimed to solicit advices from the public, college students, and professionals, and integrate them into the designs for future public transit. More than 100 students in related majors participated in this half-year-long event. Sixteen designs stood out from all entries after five rounds of review by 30 experts, presenting the designers’ outstanding abilities in observation, innovation, and imagination, and describing public transit trips in the future.
