Hunan University announced on Apr. 6 that the world-renowned academic journal Nature published Lu Bing’an’s An Ultrafast Rechargeable Aluminium-ion Battery online. Lu Bing’an, one of the lead authors, is an associate professor from the Physics and Microelectronics College of Hunan University. Nature pointed out that Lu's achievement was the first time a rechargeable aluminium-ion liquid battery has been possible, which is expected to bring a revolutionary change to the international battery industry.
Lu Bing’an worked with Dai Hongjie’s research group at Stanford University, USA. Through experiments, they found that using three-dimensional graphitic-foam cathodes can greatly shorten the battery’s charging time. He said that it used to take an hour to charge lithium battery cell phones like iphone, but now it only takes one minute to finish charging aluminium batteries. In the future, if charged for an hour, an aluminium battery can power a cell phone for three to four days.
The invention has already received many patent protection approvals in the United States and several famous enterprises are vying to buy out its patent.
