With the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the former East Timorese President and present Minister of Planning and Strategic Investment Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao received his honorary doctorate from HNU, on May 12, 2017.
HNU President Duan Xianzhong conferred the diploma on him.

Xanana delivered a speech and expressed his pride as a HNU doctor. He talked about East Timor’s history and development he witnessed. He was deeply impressed by HNU’s motto “dare to be pioneer”, and called for such “dare” in peace undertakings. He declaimed that a prosperous future will not come without regional and even world peace.

HNU Vice President Cao Yijia, Chinese Embassy in East Timor, East Timor’s ministers of tourism and finance, leaders of the Hunan Foreign Affairs Office, and HNU teachers and students attended the conferring ceremony.
Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, born on 20 June 1946, is an East Timorese politician. He was the first President of East Timor, serving from May 2002 to May 2007. He then became the fourth Prime Minister of East Timor, serving from 8 August 2007 to 16 February 2015. He has been Minister of Planning and Strategic Investment since February 2015.
