The Ministry of Education recently released a list of the national- and provincial-level first-class undergraduate disciplines of 2021. HNU has 22 disciplines shortlisted, among which 20 are at national-level and 2 are at provincial-level.

The Ministry of Education launched a project of selecting 10,000 national-level and 10,000 provincial-level first-class undergraduate disciplines in 2019. So far, HNU has 59 disciplines shortlisted, among which 54 are at national level. Except the newly-added and suspended ones, all of HNU’s undergraduate disciplines have beenranked “first-class”, while 93% of them are national-level first-class ones.

In recent years, HNU has oriented to constructing first-class undergraduate disciplines, and played a positive role in serving the national strategy and economic and social development. Based on the overall development goals and discipline plan, HNU has made coordinated efforts in setting up and optimizing disciplines. It added 12 undergraduate disciplines, modified the undergraduate cultivation plan, and boosted reform in cultivation mode. An action plan was rolled out to promote “new engineering” and “new liberal arts” construction. Nine national-level new engineering research and practice projects, and eight national-level new liberal arts research and reform practice projects were approved. Construction of specialized colleges with distinctive features has been enhanced. The software college was approved as one of the first batch of national-level featured and demonstration ones. A future technology college is planned. Top-notch innovative personnel cultivation has shown results. Chemistry and computer science discipline cultivation bases were approved by the Ministry of Education as the ones for top-notch student cultivation in basic disciplines. HNU was included into the pilots of the national plan for strengthening basic academic disciplines in chemistry. Literal arts and engineering experimental classes and eight featured personnel cultivation experimental classes were set up. The School of Biomedical Science and the College of Semiconductors (College of Integrated Circuits) were established. Efforts have been made to explore new talent cultivation mechanism and mode, foster an array of talents in urgent need, and contribute to tackling problems in core technological research that hinder the country's development and promoting sci-tech innovation.
