The 15th International Conference on Non-conventional Materials and Technologies (NOCMAT) was held recently in Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, Brazil. Prof. Xiao Yan, Dean of College of Civil Engineering of HNU and an outstanding scholar listed in “The Recruitment Program of Global Experts”, was invited to deliver an academic report on new bamboo frame structure study, which was highly praised by the participating scholars and experts.
Xiao’s study was oriented towards the mechanical performance and structural characteristics of modern laminated bamboo structure. While sustainable development mode has been widely acknowledged in dealing with the current global issues, the application of bamboo is highly debated both at home and abroad. Prof. Xiao Yan and his team, being the most dynamic group in the bamboo frame structure research, have been working on this field for almost a decade with many papers and monographs published, and a number of demonstration projects built in domestic and overseas regions.
After the conference, Prof. Xiao paid a visit to the Green Building Material Research Center in Biological System Engineering Department of Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho. Discussions between the postgraduate students and researchers for an enhanced communication and cooperation was held. In the meantime, Prof. Xiao and Dr. Sobervejo, a Princeton Professor and member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of United Nations, agreed on future research cooperation and visits.
