Xiao Yan, professor from the College of Civil Engineering of Hunan University, was elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently. He was recognized for his long-term creative research on structural engineering, especially research and development of modern bamboo structure based on sustainable development concept, as well as his contributions to the Sino-US exchange and higher education in civil engineering. With over 160 years of history, the ASCE is the oldest professional organization in the United States, and moreover, a globally influential society in civil engineering, consisting of 140,000 members throughout the world.
Devoted to related researches in Japan, US as well as in China for years, Pro. Xiao Yan has published over 200 Chinese and English monographs based on his scientific research, and over 60 high-level papers on SCI journals, some of which were cited and downloaded with high frequency. Pro. Xiao has organized and chaired several international academic conferences and seminars, and was also invited as member of expert committee or president of subcommittee to give keynote reports on international academic conferences and symposiums. He now acts as deputy editor-in-chief and editorial board member of 4 influential academic journals in civil engineering. He has 8 invention patents, among which the constraint-structural column efficiently improves the anti-seismic performance of buildings or bridge structures and is widely used in engineering. Focusing on the sustainable development of civil engineering, Prof. Xiao established modern bamboo structure system combining with China’s unique bamboo resource and published the first monograph in this field. His bamboo structure has been applied both in China and abroad.
Along with the honor of ASCE Fellow, Pro. Xiao was also elected in 2009 as a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), a specialized and influential society in international concrete circle.
