With Hunan's huge progress in technology and economic strength since the Eleventh Five-year Plan period (2006-2010), the Changsha National Supercomputer Center was built to meet the urgent demand of high-performance computing.
On November 28, 2010, construction of the center was officially launched in Hunan University, relying on the mode "Tianhe-1" (Milky Way Number One) provided by National University of Defense Technology.
In June, 2011, the first phase of "Tianhe-1" host system capable of one hundred trillion calculations per second was completed and put into use to offer computing service to the whole society. The computing ability ranked third among China's Top100 high-performance computers in 2011.
By the end of November, 2011, the host's computing ability had increased to 1,000 trillion calculations per second and its running ability peaked at 1,372.5 trillion times.
Up to now, the supercomputer center has fully accomplished software match for 16 sets of commercial software and trial computing for 18 users. The success rate for the match and users' satisfaction rate both have reached 100%.
