In the realm of science fiction, we see drivers control automobiles with gestures. Ma Chaomin, a doctoral student of School of Design, Hunan University (HNU), has made that a reality by a gesture-controlled kit to be installed under the central control of automobile.
As Ma and his teammates designed, gesture information is collected through a built-in binocular camera. Via image recognition, the information will be translated into commands to control the functions of vehicle-mounted center console.

With the gesture-controlled kits, drivers can answer a call or hang up, seek contacts, select and play music, adjust volume, control radio, navigate with GPS, and zoom in or out the maps with several simple hand gestures like sweeping, clapping, waving, pointing, grabbing, folding.
“This gesture-control technology can help drivers get rid of touching the buttons on the center console, and enable them to focus on vehicle direction, which will greatly reduce driving risk,” Ma explained.

This gesture technology has been accepted by some automobile manufacturers, and certain domestic enterprises are inclined to integrate this technology into their concept cars to observe the market response.
