Hunan educational authority announced on March 18 that, some universities adopt online defense or preliminary defense of thesis amid the epidemic, including Central South University, Hunan University, Hunan Normal University, Changsha University of Science and Technology, and Central South University of Forestry and Technology. It is in a bid to ensure that the postgraduate students can complete their study and apply for their master's or doctoral degrees.

Hunan University held its first online postgraduate student thesis defense on March 7. Jia Yanfang from its College of Foreign Languages was the first doctoral candidate who passed dissertation defense online. Teng Jingjing, a MBA student from Business School, completed her postgraduate thesis defense via video call.
